I just moved here (to adultfanfiction.net) from fanfiction.net in response to the great 2012 porno purge.  I will be moving my stories over as I have time to do so.  I guess I should be grateful that I'm not a terribly prolific writer!

I suppose I should actually create a profile that does tell a little about myself. I have realized from reading other author profiles that I want to know more about the people who review my work or whose work I admire, and I am assuming I am not alone in this.

Name: Magpie (I like shiny, pretty things…..)

    Age: 38

Astrological data: Aquarius Sun, Leo Moon, Virgo Ascendant

    Chinese zodiac: Wood Tiger

Blood Type: AB (who really cares????? Other than my OB/GYN when I’m pregnant…)

    Gender: female

I am the thirty-eight year old mother and housewife. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and I was working on my master’s degree in counseling until I recently had the startling realization that I don’t want to be a counselor (too bad I didn’t realize that before I started grad school!!!) So a lot of my stories tend to have a psychological focus or slant towards analyzing character motivation or finding ways to psychologically justify character behavior. Hopefully that is something I will grow out of LOL! I think it is just the consequence of spending six years studying psychology and having to write about case studies et al. In terms of future educational/career plans…I am considering switching to a university that offers a masters/Ph.D program in mythology. I read and study those in my free time anyways, so shouldn’t I get an education/job that relates back to them? That would have to make me happier than a career of listening every day to unhappy people.

My daughter is the person I blame for my current attempts at writing fiction. She made me aware of fanfiction.net, which is where I began writing, and she also introduced me to manga. Since I have a lot of downtime and no creative outlet, I am taking advantage of it to sit and write fiction all day. I realize I still need a lot of practice and work to improve my fiction writing skills, but I have yet to find something I can’t teach myself to do if I apply myself to the task. I used to write fiction a lot when I was a teenager, but I quit after I got married at 19 (speaking of which…all you starry-eyed young girls out there…don’t marry the sexy, dangerous guy who is exciting before you are old enough to know better. Save yourself a lot of pain and the cost of a divorce! There’s a reason moms nag about this sort of thing…it’s because we didn’t listen to our moms and then we were beaten upside the head with the 2 x 4 of reality, so now we are trying to spare you the pain we went through. But I’ll save my breath…I know, I know…this guy is different…)

My personal interests have always tended to run toward religion, metaphysics and psychology. I won’t go into detail and bore anyone here with that stuff.

My favorite manga is Fruits Basket. Only Naruto inspires my imagination as well with its character development and drama. That’s not to say that there isn’t any other good manga out there; just that I am not as inspired by the other stories I have read due to whatever weird personal preferences my brain has. I am finding myself becoming more inspired by other books, particularly Naruto and DN Angel. As of yet no new stories for those series have sprung to mind, but I’m sure its possible. Other manga I have read and enjoyed are Midnight Secretary, Wallflower, Naruto, Yotsuba&!, Ouran High School Host Club, Oh My Goddess!, Love Hina, Goong, YuYu Hakashu, Orange Yane no Chiisana Ie, Yume De Aetara, The Tyrant Falls in Love, and Hotaru No Hikari. Mainly I read whatever my daughter brings home, so blame her if you don’t like what I read.

Some of the anime I have enjoyed are Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, The Cat Returns, Ninja Scroll, Howls Moving Castle, and Porco Rosso. I haven’t watched much anime for two reasons: 1) in my early twenties my roommate had me watch Legend of the Overfiend, Fist of the North Star, and Akira and my brain never recovered from the violence and unhappy endings (I NEED happy endings…life is tragic enough!); and 2) because I am one of those strange people who can’t stand movies and television 99 of the time. There are the rare few movies that I enjoy, but most of the time I feel like I wasted 90 minutes of my life.

That being said, here are the few movies I have watched and liked: Pride and Prejudice (Keira Knightly version), Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Fish, Smoke Signals, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, most Disney stuff, Emma (Gwyneth Paltrow version), Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson version), and Star Wars (original trilogy).

Musical interests are varied. My current faves are Evanescence (I have decided that Fallen should be the theme album for Akito and Shigure) and Weird Al Yankovic (Look at me I’m white and nerdy!). Long term faves that I always return to are J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Lorena McKennit, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Led Zeppelin, Depeche Mode, The Subhumans, The Cure, The Violent Femmes, The Cranberries, Alice in Chains, Metallica, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, and Duran Duran.

Literary faves tend to run more towards fantasy or Regency era British Lit. I loved Tolkein’s stuff, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles De Lint (the man is a genius!!!!), J.K. Rowling, Jennifer Roberson’s Cheysuli series, Piers Anthony (especially Incarnations of Immortality), Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Mists of Avalon (not the sequels so much), Richard Adams Watership Down, L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz series, and Sherman Alexie. I enjoy the occasional odd romance, chick-lit type stuff.

I’ve blathered on about myself long enough. Thanks for taking the time to read this and my humble attempts at fiction! If you like my fiction, please review and let me know (As you know, authors love feedback, especially if it is positive). If you don't like my stories, please feel free to let me know, but be polite. I am open to criticism so long as it doesn't become hurtful. Share with me what you don't like about my story, not what you don't like about me personally. I will, in return, be considerate of you.

    Bright Blessings,

    Magpie

Disclaimer: I don't own Fruits Basket or any other manga I may decide to embellish upon.
