Ranma 1/2:

Ranma was the first anime I was introduced to many, many, many years ago. I always found the story funny and loved the Akane & Ranma relationship. I could definitely relate to Akane, since I was (at that time) around the same age as Akane. I’m also an Asian female that is more athletic than dainty, a bit of a tomboy and very independent. So, it’s not a surprise that she is my favorite character of the series. Recently I started to re-watch the series and then read the manga for the first time. The ending of the manga left me completely frustrated. I stumbled onto FFN wanting to find a resolution and I got hooked on Fan Fiction

I’m a hardcore shipper of the Ranma & Akane pairing. Any stories written by me will include them as the main pairing. I can’t even read stories with other pairings, it just feels wrong.

Anime vs Manga

As much as I think the Anime is funny, I blame it for all the fanon mischaracterizations of the characters, especially Akane and Ranma.

Akane has a temper, she is prone to reacting without listening too and/or understanding the entire situation, she is jealous and headstrong. Akane does not hit Ranma with a mallet all the time, she does not hit him for every slight, she does not go around hitting people for no reason, she is not scared of sex and she is an excellent martial artist.

Ranma is a jerk, with a loud mouth that says pretty crappy things, but he is at heart, a good person. He is not perfect and he does not sit there and just take Akane’s “abuse”. If you have any doubt that Ranma loves Akane, read the Saffron Arc of the manga.

The movie “The Battle of Nekonron, China!” is probably the biggest perpetuator of all the fanon misunderstandings of the characters. While it’s fun to watch, it is not canon and is not based on the manga.

Avatar the Last Airbender:

I loved AtLA when it first aired. I thought it was funny, smart and progressed nicely. When the series ended, I thought it was a little sudden and with the tease about Zuko’s mother, I was hoping the new season would start focusing on Zuko finding his mother and rebuilding that Fire Nation. It did not and instead we got The Legend of Korra, which pales in comparison and made me question my love of certain characters.

The worst thing about LoK? The way the creators handled Katara. In the flashbacks, we see that Sokka is a council member and later became Chief, Aang built republic city, Toph was the chief of police and where was Katara the entire time? No one knows. How do you not address the main female character of your original story?

I was actually okay with the way the story ended because they were all young and things were left open. After LoK, I find out that Aang, was a horrible parent, showing favoritism to the Airbender who was least like him in personality. He was so bad, that his grown-up children barely got along.

It feels completely unbelievable that Katara would tolerate or condone this behavior if she knew that it was hurting her children. So it leaves me to believe that the future Katara had lost all of her determination or that Aang didn’t care about her opinion at all.

Finally, Toph. I don’t care that she had two children from two different fathers. What I do care about is that she was alone, that she never found love. That she grew up with parents that didn’t understand her yet she did the same thing to her daughters. Toph deserved a happier ending than the creators gave her.

In terms of shipping, LoK has turned me into a Zutara lover and I will pretend that LoK never existed even though I am forced to watch it with my family.

Why am I writing this here? Because it still pisses me off but I will probably never write a story in the AtLA universe, so this is a good a place as any to vent.
